Training 

Strengthing community and health worker skills for sustainable eye care services 

Traning of Community Members

  • From 2020 to 2025, Eyu-Ethiopia strengthened community-level capacity by integrating practical eye health knowledge, hygiene promotion, and disease prevention trainings alongside service delivery.

 

  • Community members were trained and engaged in the provision of primary eye care services reaching a total of 454,485 people.

 

  • Eye health education and awareness creation, including COVID-19 prevention messaging, was provided to large community groups during outreach activities.

 

  • Hygiene promotion activities, including training on face-washing practices, were provided along with the distribution of soaps to households.

 

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks and hand sanitizers were distributed to community members along with training on how to use it to support COVID-19 prevention and control efforts.

Traning of Health Worker

  • Eyu-Ethiopia invested in strengthening the skills of frontline health workers to ensure sustainable and quality eye care service delivery.

  • Provided MSC project supervision support for international students at LSHTM 

​

  • Technical and funding support provided to local MSc students in Ethiopia 

 

  • A total of 978 health workers received training in primary eye care, trachoma control, mental health , and community-based service delivery between 2020 and 2025.

 

  • Trained health workers contributed to large-scale eye screening and examination services, treatment of ocular infections, and referral of complex cases.

 

  • Health workers were supported to integrate mental health screening and referral, particularly for trachomatous trichiasis patients experiencing psychological distress.

  • PhD scholarship opportunities were created to two staff members.

  • Quarterly journal club sessions are organized for technical and program staff.

 

  • Staff critically review and present recent peer-reviewed scientific articles related to eye health, public health, trachoma elimination, and primary eye care.

​

  • The sessions enhance staff capacity in research appraisal, data interpretation, scientific writing, and presentation skills.

 

  • The activity also promotes a learning culture and knowledge sharing within the organization.
